ELEVATING STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH RUNNERS STRATEGY (A COLLABORATIVE CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH TO THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 1 SIMPANG MAMPLAM)

Abstract

Depending on conducted the research found there were many students less vocabulary for getting the meaning from reading comprehension, they still less motivation, they boring easily to study English, in the other hand, the teacher still used conventional strategy in teaching reading in the classroom. Basicly, There were two problems of the research (1) How does Runners Strategy improve the students reading comprehension to the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Mamplam? (2) How do the students’ respond toward the implementation of Runners Strategy in learning reading comprehension to the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Mamplam? Therefore, the purposes of the research were to know the Runners Strategy can increase the students reading to the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Mamplam and to know the students’ respond in teaching reading by using Runners Strategy to the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Mamplam. This research was designed in collaborative classroom action research. The subject of this research was the second year students of SMAN 1 Simpang Mamplam and the sample of this research was XI which was consisted of 20 students. This research was conducted through two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. In cycle I, the students only got the mean score 60, while in cycle II it became better to 74.5. Furthermore, based on the result of the teacher's performance in the teaching was 53.6 of the cycle I and 77 of the cycle II. The students' activities during learning process in the cycle I was 50 and it increased became 75 in the cycle II. Furthermore, the result of questionnaires, the researcher got the mean of total score 3.91 and it was categorized “agree” and it had reached the criteria of success. Finally, it can be concluded that the researcher had succeed in improving and motivating the students’  reading comprehension through Runners Strategy.
